Keary ‘ still a Maroon’

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - - 2018 GRAND FINAL - THE PLAYMAKER TRAVIS MEYN

KEVIN Walters still regards Luke Keary as a Queenslander and admits it disappoints him that the Sydney Roosters fiveeighth cannot pull on a Maroons jersey.

Keary, 26, was born and raised in Ipswich before moving to NSW with his parents as a 10-year-old.

After nine years in Sydney, Keary returned to Queensland in 2011 and turned out for the Burleigh Bears where he caught the eyes of South Sydney officials.

In the early years of his NRL career, Keary declared he wanted to play for Queensland, however State of Origin eligibility rules made him a Blue because of his time spent in NSW.

Queensland coach Walters, who also hails from Ipswich, said he still regarded Keary to have Maroon blood.

“I regard Luke Keary as a Queenslander,” he said. “It does (disappoint me that he can’t play for Queensland) but we won’t go down that path.’’
