‘ Tis the season for scammers
POLICE are warning people to beware “romance scammers” keen to capitalise on lonely hearts this Christmas.
Latest Scamwatch data has revealed Australians have lost $101 million this year, a record high with one month sill to go. Last year the figure was $90.9 million.
Scammers are mostly based overseas, with known hot spots in southeast Asia, Baltic nations and west Africa. They are taking ad- vantage of emerging digital currencies, technologies, events and seasonal trends such as tax time and holidays.
Dating and romance scams were among the two biggest money-earners for scammers this year in Australia.
Scammers may take months to groom the victim’s affections before asking for money, gifts or banking/credit card details.
