‘ Tis the sea­son for scam­mers

PO­LICE are warn­ing peo­ple to be­ware “ro­mance scam­mers” keen to cap­i­talise on lonely hearts this Christ­mas.

Lat­est Scamwatch data has re­vealed Aus­tralians have lost $101 mil­lion this year, a record high with one month sill to go. Last year the fig­ure was $90.9 mil­lion.

Scam­mers are mostly based over­seas, with known hot spots in south­east Asia, Baltic na­tions and west Africa. They are tak­ing ad- van­tage of emerg­ing dig­i­tal cur­ren­cies, tech­nolo­gies, events and sea­sonal trends such as tax time and hol­i­days.

Dat­ing and ro­mance scams were among the two big­gest money-earn­ers for scam­mers this year in Aus­tralia.

Scam­mers may take months to groom the vic­tim’s af­fec­tions be­fore ask­ing for money, gifts or bank­ing/credit card de­tails.
