Mazaz really a stayer with pizzazz

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - - RACING -

MAZAZ showed superior staying ability in what proved an entertaining 2400m event at Randwick yesterday.

The Chris Waller-trained runner was ridden patiently by Kathy O’Hara after Dusk Falls went out to a big lead on the main pack, who were made to chase from the 800m.

O’Hara and Mazaz took the lead inside the final 200m to beat Earth Angel by half a length with Equipped in third.

“It looked like a bit of the speed came out of the race after a few scratchings and quite often when you think there’s no speed on they clap it on for everyone,” O’Hara said.

“Plan A was to be in the first three but the speed was quick going into the first corner so I elected to hold a spot and not push on and, as it turned out, it was probably a good decision.”

Waller stable representative Charlie Duckworth said the Galileo six-year-old ran better at home following a seventh placing in Melbourne last start.

“I just don’t think he handled the Mooney Valley track last start and he obviously knows the Sydney set-up pretty well,” he said. “It was a good, solid staying performance but he’s got good European bloodlines and he’ll stay on and win another one, I’m sure.”
