It is con­cern­ing that im­pris­oned males are still treated as ju­ve­niles un­til they are 21 (“Riot teens sent to adult jail”, 16/6).

A week or two on bread and wa­ter for the se­rial of­fend­ers and wreck­ers while com­pul­so­rily learn­ing about the his­tory of our coun­try and the hard work and sac­ri­fices made by our pioneers and set­tlers might do a lot bet­ter than pan­der­ing.

As 20-year-olds in the 1960s, I and a lot of mates had al­ready done a year in the army and were serv­ing in the Viet­nam War.

Vol­un­teer sol­diers still in their teens also gave their lives in pre­vi­ous wars. BRIAN WHYBROW WANNIASSA ACT
