$ 3000 fine for killer lion

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - - WORLD -

A NORTH Carolina zoo has been hit with safety violations after a lion fatally mauled a 22year-old intern last December.

Because Alexandra Black was there as an unpaid intern, the zoo could not be hit with a direct citation for her death. But local officials issued safety violation orders this week after determining other employees were also exposed to hazards.

The zoo faces penalties of just $3000 for the incident.

The investigation found it had ineffective procedures to secure dangerous animals and did not do adequate inspections and maintenance on animal enclosures.
