Priya rises above vile racist taunts

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - - INSIDER -

MISS Universe Australia Priya Serrao has spoken of being the target of racist schoolyard slurs after moving to Australia.

Serrao was born in India and moved to Melbourne with her family at the age of 11.

“In terms of my experience growing up, when I first came here I did experience a bit of, kind of, racism particularly from other students,” Serrao told the Shameless podcast.

“There was a bit of that racial underlying ‘go back to where you come from’.”

She said she was called offensive names including: “you curry c-word” and “a brown monkey”.

“It did not subside within the first couple of years,” Serrao said. “Even I after I won Miss Universe Australia there were people online saying, ‘she is not even Australian’ so why would I want to make myself even less Australian by saying, ‘hey, I had a difficult time when I first grew up here.”

Priya Serrao is Miss Universe Australia.
