The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - - RACING - RAY THOMAS

STAR apprentice Jean Van Overmeire rode his first Sydney Saturday winner in more than five months aboard See You Soon at Royal Randwick yesterday.

Van Overmeire broke his right leg and ankle in a trackwork mishap that kept him sidelined for four months but his comeback gained momentum after his win in the Kirkham Plate (1000m).

In an exciting finish, See You Soon ($8), who was bred in France to southern hemisphere time, ran down Dame Giselle ($10) to win by a shorthead with Endorse ($6.50) more than two lengths away third.

See You Soon, trained by Jean Dubois, had a barrier trial just four days earlier but Van Overmeire said he felt the filly would be competitive on debut.

“On Tuesday, Jean told me he would like to run See You Soon (today) so don’t do too much on her,” Van Overmeire said. “The trial was more about educating her and I felt I had a lot of horse underneath me. I was quietly confident coming into this race.’’

Van Overmeire said it wasn’t until he got See You Soon to the outside that he felt the filly could run down her rivals.

“To be honest, as soon as I pulled her out into clear air, she accelerated nicely but it wasn’t until I passed a couple with 150m to go when she really let go,’’ he said. “She ran through the line very strongly.’’

Dubois said he will give See You Soon her opportunity in the $1 million Golden Gift (1100m) on November 9.
