Buck’s Future looks bright
BUCK’S Future won this year’s Group 1 Paws Of Thunder from box seven and wore the black rug again in last Tuesday’s Lismore Cup heat win, but trainer Syd Swain and owner Robert Jones are delighted to see the dog in box one in Tuesday night’s $40,000-to-the-winner final.
Buck’s Future began brilliantly from box seven and led throughout to beat Cash Point and Miss Splendamiro in the $75,000 Paws Of Thunder at WP in January and jumped well from the same draw to grab the lead entering the back straight in his Lismore Cup heat win.
Fernando Blaster and Buck’s Future were fastest heat winners, each covering the 520m in 29.68sec, but the final draw favours the latter.
The Terry Jordan-trained Fernando Blaster had box eight in his heat win but has drawn two on Tuesday night. Fernando Blaster’s 29.61sec from box six was quickest of this year’s
National Derby heats at Wentworth Park but the dog failed to handle box one in the final and finished fourth to Axel Footluce. Because of his fast heat time, he was sent out $2.80 favourite for the Derby final despite Jordan saying the dog was far better suited drawn wide.
Buck’s Future’s trainer Syd Swain has always insisted his greyhound is a good railer so is at home from box one.
“Now that he has drawn the inside on Tuesday, Buck’s Future just has to make use of it by coming out of the boxes cleanly,’’ Swain said.
Robert Jones, who owns 10 thoroughbreds and a similar number of greyhounds, said: “Buck’s Future has won 13 races but I have only watched him race live once, and that was at Richmond. Now he has drawn box one, I might go to Lismore with Syd and watch the cup.’’
Sandave Diva’s 29.84sec was third-fastest of the four Lismore Cup heat winners.
