‘ Big one’ threatens houses
GRAVE fears were held for the rich farming area of Ben Lomond and Wandsworth.
Two out-of-control fires surrounded the region halfway between Armidale and Glen Innes; one 4885ha blaze to the north and another 559ha inferno to the south.
“There is a bus on standby should the residents need to evacuate,” Armidale Mayor Simon Murray said. “There is no denying the Wandsworth fire is a big one and there are a lot of houses there. Let’s hope they can control the fires before Tuesday.”
The blaze in the Carrai Creek, 100km east of Armidale, is about 124,000ha which is the equivalent of three-quarters of Sydney and its suburbs.
As of late yesterday the fire was still out of control and had breached containment lines on the northern side.
