Travellers so crazy in love

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - - INSIDER -

Everyone thought Alyshia Monds and Brett Eastwood were crazy but they knew straight away they were a match made in heaven. The pair were travelling separately through Europe in September 2016 when they met in Venice and hit it off straight away. It was a fleeting 24 hours in the Italian city, but the two decided they would meet up again in London in two weeks.

“It really was love at first sight — as cliched as it sounds,” Alyshia says. “Our tours went in separate directions the following day after meeting but we kept in contact and organised a date in London two weeks later.”

Alyshia only had another 24 hours in London before she was set to fly home to Australia, but after that second date, they knew they were meant to be together and had to make some tough decisions if they wanted to see where this new romance took them.

“We decided that it was just meant to be and one of us had to take the plunge and move to the other side of the world,” Alyshia says.

“Brett decided to uproot his entire life and follow me to Sydney so we could be together.”

It was a move that shocked their friends and family.

“Everyone thought we were crazy or I was delusional having only spent less than 48 hours together,” the new bride says. “We moved in together right away and Brett fell in love with Australia. We haven’t looked back.

“Aside from being instantly physically attracted to one another, I would say the biggest thing that caught both of our attention was our sense of humour.

“We both love having a laugh and don’t take things too seriously. I believe after a few Simpsons, Friends and Harry Potter quotes and it was all over!”

One day last September when it was clear the pair were destined to spend the rest of their lives together, they were walking along Palm Beach after lunch at Jonah’s when they stumbled across a picnic that had been set up by Brett’s friends. Something in the spread caught Alyshia’s attention.

“I sighted a stack of bridal mags among the picnic foods and champagne and when I looked back to Brett he was down on one knee,” she recalls.

The couple married at Long Reef Golf Club with a reception at the same venue. Guests, including family and friends from the UK and New Zealand, helped celebrate and prove those initial doubters wrong. PICTURES: ROSE PHOTOS
