Job hunt starts here
We have to find a way out of our unemployment disgrace (“Handout generation”, TST, July 1). The depressing forecast of more than 300,000 young Australians joining the Centrelink queue by the age of 25 has to be averted.
This is where the Government can show some “constructive initiative”. It can start by introducing legislation for companies to employ more local people to “service” customers. No more having to deal with “overseas” telephone operators.
And make unions butt out in regard to the wages paid to these workers; it is better to get a “basic wage” than rely on a handout. A sense of pride is associated with receiving a pay packet, regardless how meagre it may be, because you have earned it. MARIO RAPANARO Dianella
