Storm hits Philippines
THE most powerful typhoon to strike the Philippines in five years has made landfall in the northeastern town of Baggao, with 205km/h winds and gusts of up to 285km/h.
Mangkhut, a Category 5 storm, came ashore yesterday in Cagayan province and was moving west-north-west at 35km/h. It was expected to head for Hong Kong late yesterday.
More than 13,000 people were evacuated before the typhoon’s landfall. More than 5.2 million live in a radius of 125km of Mangkhut’s path.
