Storm hits Philip­pines

THE most pow­er­ful typhoon to strike the Philip­pines in five years has made land­fall in the north­east­ern town of Bag­gao, with 205km/h winds and gusts of up to 285km/h.

Mangkhut, a Cat­e­gory 5 storm, came ashore yes­ter­day in Ca­gayan prov­ince and was mov­ing west-north-west at 35km/h. It was ex­pected to head for Hong Kong late yes­ter­day.

More than 13,000 peo­ple were evac­u­ated be­fore the typhoon’s land­fall. More than 5.2 mil­lion live in a ra­dius of 125km of Mangkhut’s path.
