Champion is born

The Sunday Times - - World -

The latest US Open winner Naomi Osaka proved herself a champion by defeating Serena Williams.

Osaka grew up idolising Williams. When Williams realised she could not defeat Osaka with her racquet, she smashed it and tried to defeat her and umpire Carlos Ramos with her massive ego. Ramos faced that ego and put Osaka’s tennis skills ahead of Williams’ tantrum tactics. A brave new tennis champion was born that day because a veteran of integrity stayed strong. Osaka has a new role model for character and courage. MARK DYER Rockingham
