Aussie jobs first

The Sunday Times - - YOUR SAY WA - NEIL BEVIS Forrestdale

While there is every welcome indication of continuing activity in WA’s maritime offshore oil and gas industry, it is still sad that we continue to see the employment of foreign seafarers in some seagoing ranks to the exclusion of qualified, trained, underemployed and unemployed Australian seafarers.

What may seem logical around the boardroom and Cabinet table is not so comprehensible to captains, deck officers, marine engineers and the ratings on deck as job prospects and careers are being placed in doubt, causing a slump in morale. It is time for Australian seafarers to be reassigned their proper function in the offshore industry and our economy.
