Bishop struts out in $1700 ‘cult shoes’

The Sunday Times - - CONFIDENTIAL -

SHE was long considered the Imelda Marcos of politics thanks to her pricey wardrobe crammed with high-end shoes, designer label threads and expensive jewels.

And now it seems the former foreign minister Julie Bishop has outdone even herself with her latest fashion acquisition, which she was spied proudly showing. Flanked by boyfriend David Panton and dining with two mystery companions in the Mornington Peninsula last week, Ms Bishop stepped out in a pair of heels once described in fashion circles as “the” cult shoe of the decade — Saint Laurent’s Opyum black pumps that retail for around $1700.

That’s if you can get your hands on a pair, of course. The heels are renowned as one of the hardest to buy and carry a long waitlist though it’s understood small sizes occasionally pop up

We’re not sure how Ms Bishop managed to snaffle a pair, though it appears the one-time PM contender still wields considerable fashion clout despite the fact she no longer struts the corridors of power.

Our eagle-eyed spotter passed on another interesting detail from the lunch at the Paringa Estate winery; the super-fit Ms Bishop ordered an extra large serving of confit pork belly

with crackle.
