Merrigum golf:

The Tatura Guardian - - Sport -

Merrigum golfers dodged a bullet on Saturday after the cool change brought pleasant conditions in which to play golf following the extreme heat of Friday.

The event was the third round of the summer four ball and was 4BBB par.

There was a reasonable turnout for the first Saturday of golf for the new year and what better way to blow out any hangovers from 2018 than with a par event.

Simon and Craig Doherty got the year off to a good start by compiling a winning score of +10, two better than their closest rivals.

It was a good team effort by the pair and they were in a close tussle with the runners-up for the day Bruce Andrews and Ash Sanders for the overall honours, with just a couple of points separating the two pairs.

Bruce and Ash had a score of +8 in taking out second place on Saturday.

Nearest-the-pins were won by Bruce Brown on the sixth and James Campbell on the jackpot 12th.

Andrew Wood was in hot form in the twilight competition and notched another win last Thursday with a score of 41-2.5-38.5.

Woody is making things difficult for himself by losing a shot from his handicap for each win, however he just keeps rising to the occasion by getting better and better each week.

Simon Doherty did give him a run for his money but missed out on a count back after scoring 43-4.5-38.5.

It was the same with least putts, with Woody winning on a count back from Simon after both had 15.

Woody took the jackpot for nearest-the-pin on the ninth while Simon took the 14th.

And in answer to the obvious question, yes, there were more than two players at last week’s twilight competition. The twopoint cut was 40.

A combined Hill Top Merrigum pennant side took on Rochester at Rich River on Sunday but went down 3/2. Merrigum’s Bruce Brown and Greg Hall won their match 3/2 and Hill Top’s Col Barlow and Dylan Burls won 1 up.

Pennant this week is at Numurkah against Shepparton with hit-off at 8.20 am.

This Saturday’s event is stableford. It will likely be another early start with the current forecast going for a 42°C top temperature. The captain will be all over it and keep everyone up to date.
