The new luxe: inner city gems. Holidaymakers shake on it.
John and Soosie Thompson built their holiday home high on a hill overlooking Western Australia’s picturesque Margaret River region.
The home was designed to capture views over rolling hills to the sparkling ocean beyond.
John says the couple love the feeling of space and seclusion on their 4ha property. “We can’t see another house from where we are, we look out over the Cape and over Geographe Bay.”
The sense of relaxation is also key to its appeal. “When you’re down there, your mind just goes out of gear. You can get in the car and just leave the challenges behind,” he says.
The Thompsons bought the land 16 years ago and five years later built their home, designed by Grounds Kent and built by Nick Goode Construction. The brief was to make the most of the natural surrounds.
“Everything evolved over the course of three or four years. We knew what we wanted inside the house and our architect put a wonderful structure around it,” Thompson says.
The open-plan living space has 7m ceilings lined with western red cedar and walls of glass to capture the views. Out through large bi-fold doors is the entertaining terrace, ideal for long summer lunches.
Inside is a hand-cut limestone feature wall with built-in fireplace for when the weather cools. The home has four bedrooms and three bathrooms.
While the Thompsons adore their piece of the southwest, the couple now spends the winter months in Bali so they have less time for their coastal retreat and have decided to sell.
