Privacy, peace and views
Brisbane. Doobawah, 26 Empire Vista, Ormiston
There are stunning Stradbroke and Moreton Island views from this 1884 Queenslander.
“It’s like a sanctuary,” vendor Helen Sloan says. “We have koalas in the trees and 180-degree views out over the bay.”
Sloan and husband Richard moved to Doobawah, which means “vast expanse of water” in the local indigenous language, 15 years ago.
They had two children but Sloan soon fell pregnant with twins. “We realised we needed more space,” she says. They enclosed the lower level of their stately Queenslander, creating a two-storey home with six bedrooms and four bathrooms.
The home is on 1889sq m of absolute waterfront land. Period features include 3.3m ceilings, pretty timber fretwork on the veranda, original tongue-and-groove wall panels and leadlight windows.
Upstairs is the master bedroom, main kitchen, dining and lounge rooms, all opening on to the deep wraparound veranda.
Downstairs are four more bedrooms, a large open-plan living space, second kitchen and covered area for entertaining. The home also has a media room and billiards room. The manicured gardens house a resort-style pool and a children’s fort.
The Sloans have loved the proximity to Brisbane, just 40 minutes away, while also feeling like they are removed from the busy city life.
Helen Sloan says she will miss the privacy, the peace and views from her home. “It’s really been a huge decision to sell, all of us have such a close connection to the home. We renovated and made it our own,” she says.
With their children in their teens, the family is looking for a lifestyle change but plans to stay local.
