Land­scape de­signer Cather­ine Shields has come a long way since train­ing as a physi­cist in her na­tive Eng­land. After she grad­u­ated as a land­scape ar­chi­tect, her new pro­fes­sion and love of travel took her to Hong Kong, Ho­bart, Syd­ney, Perth and Dar­win be­fore she fi­nally set­tled in Ho­bart in 2000 to start her own busi­ness, The Alchemy of Gar­dens.

“It was the wilder­ness that called me back to Tas­ma­nia,” Shields says in Aus­tralian Dream­scapes, a new book by gar­den pho­tog­ra­pher Claire Takacs that fo­cuses on de­sign­ers with a nat­u­ral­is­tic ap­proach to plant­ing.
