It is not cheaper for a com­pany to en­gage labour hire per­son­nel (“Unions go to war over labour hire”, 11/1). In most cases it is the same cost as em­ploy­ing a ca­sual. All labour hire em­ploy­ees are paid ac­cord­ing to an award.

Com­pa­nies en­gage labour hire ser­vices be­cause it saves costs and time try­ing to re­cruit peo­ple. Labour hire com­pa­nies also have ar­range­ments where a worker may be en­gaged per­ma­nently.

Unions hate labour hire be­cause it cre­ates a fire­wall be­tween the com­pany and worker and ex­poses unions to third-party li­a­bil­i­ties if they try in­dus­trial ac­tion. Trust Me
