Just a runaway girl?

The Weekend Australian - - COMMENTARY -

Without knowing the full story, letter writers (11/1) have variously declared a Saudi teenage runaway to be brave, an ideal immigrant and a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I have lived in Saudi Arabia and there is no doubt the country has a different view on the status of women, but this does not mean this individual has been mistreated. Perhaps she is just a girl running away from her parents (not unknown in our society).

Can anyone seriously compare this case with that of the Pakistani woman Asia Bibi, who has been in jail for eight years under threat of death for blasphemy? She has recently been acquitted but is still in real danger in her own country. Graham Pinn, Maroochydore, Qld
