Ringing in the new year in style: your guide
THIS New Year’s Eve, there’s going to be plenty happening in Cairns – with something to keep every member of the family entertained, well-fed and watered as we prepare to head into 2016. Make your way into the city for the spectacular main event, with the Cairns Esplanade coming to life once again with plenty of local and national musical talent filling the Western Lawn area with fantastic sounds. The New Year’s Eve festivities, organised by Cairns Regional Council, will feature a concert showcasing local musos Chris Ah Gee, The Nightshift and the Dialers. There will also be talent converging on Cairns from afar, with Brisbane outfit Paua bringing reggae to the mix and Sydney funk and soul artist James Fox Higgins and his ninepiece band headlining celebrations and ushering in the new year. The little ones will be kept well entertained as well, with plenty of kids’ entertainment on the Esplanade and a second kids space on the Eastern Lawn – with inflatable slides, jumping castles and climbing walls to keep the youngest members of the family occupied. There’ll be plenty of bang in bringing in 2016 – revellers will be treated to, not one, but two firework displays each lasting 10 minutes, lighting up the night sky and the year ahead with lots of sparkle. Kids don’t need stay up too far past bedtime to enjoy the spectacle, with an early display slated for 9pm – a visual extravaganza created by multifiring techniques including all the crackle and whistles that kids love. For those revellers with big plans to be out all night, the main fireworks event will of course take place at midnight. You won’t miss it – there will be a countdown and energy will be in the air as Cairns residents promise themselves to commit to another round of new year’s resolutions.
