THIS New Year’s Eve, there’s go­ing to be plenty hap­pen­ing in Cairns – with some­thing to keep ev­ery mem­ber of the fam­ily en­ter­tained, well-fed and wa­tered as we pre­pare to head into 2016. Make your way into the city for the spec­tac­u­lar main event, with the Cairns Es­planade com­ing to life once again with plenty of lo­cal and na­tional mu­si­cal tal­ent fill­ing the Western Lawn area with fan­tas­tic sounds. The New Year’s Eve fes­tiv­i­ties, or­gan­ised by Cairns Re­gional Coun­cil, will fea­ture a con­cert show­cas­ing lo­cal mu­sos Chris Ah Gee, The Night­shift and the Di­alers. There will also be tal­ent con­verg­ing on Cairns from afar, with Brisbane out­fit Paua bring­ing reg­gae to the mix and Sydney funk and soul artist James Fox Hig­gins and his nine­piece band head­lin­ing cel­e­bra­tions and ush­er­ing in the new year. The lit­tle ones will be kept well en­ter­tained as well, with plenty of kids’ en­ter­tain­ment on the Es­planade and a sec­ond kids space on the East­ern Lawn – with in­flat­able slides, jump­ing cas­tles and climb­ing walls to keep the youngest mem­bers of the fam­ily oc­cu­pied. There’ll be plenty of bang in bring­ing in 2016 – rev­ellers will be treated to, not one, but two fire­work dis­plays each last­ing 10 min­utes, light­ing up the night sky and the year ahead with lots of sparkle. Kids don’t need stay up too far past bed­time to enjoy the spec­ta­cle, with an early dis­play slated for 9pm – a vis­ual ex­trav­a­ganza cre­ated by mul­ti­fir­ing tech­niques in­clud­ing all the crackle and whis­tles that kids love. For those rev­ellers with big plans to be out all night, the main fire­works event will of course take place at mid­night. You won’t miss it – there will be a count­down and en­ergy will be in the air as Cairns res­i­dents prom­ise them­selves to com­mit to an­other round of new year’s res­o­lu­tions. Spec­ta­tors will be daz­zled by more than 15,000 spe­cial ef­fects used to cre­ate a spec­tac­u­lar chore­ographed dis­play.
