Buckle up Cairns, Australia’s biggest comedy festival is back in town to deliver the freshest and funniest Australian stars, newcomers and international performers, including MC Dave Callan (below), Carl Donnelly, Andy Saunders, Daniel Fernandez and Sharul Channa. The show is at Tanks from April 26-18. Tickets and more information are available at tanksartscentre.com Shoot from the Hip examines the proliferation of hipster culture and its subsequent impact on contemporary Australian art. From the subversive, to the ironic, the exhibition highlights the unique approach made by Australian artists in responding to the subcultural rejection of mainstream society through hipsterdom. The theme for the 12th Artists of the North exhibition, “Hot, wet and steamy in the tropics”, asks our regional artists to explore what is often a love-hate relationship with the extremes of summer in the tropics. All the senses are roused as the monsoonal trough plunges, bringing long hot days and nights, downpours for weeks, floods, cyclones and huge ballooning storm clouds. This is your last chance to catch Melbournebased artist, author and illustrator Shaun Tan’s exhibit, which explores the artistry of his original picture book and the process of turning it into a short film.
