EXPECT to wait about a year for the new Peugeot 208GTI, which went on show in Geneva this week.

The fast frog gets a turbocharged 145kw, 1.6-litre engine with sixspeed manual gearbox lifted from the striking RCZ sports coupe.

It also gains body aero add-ons and bigger wheels to paint a fairly athletic picture.

It is expected to leap from 0-100km/h in less than 7.0 seconds.

With this car, Peugeot hopes to take on the likes of the Ford Focus ST and Renault Megane RS even though it’s a size smaller.

Peugeot had a GTI this size back in the 1980s with its 205 GTI that met with some sales success even though build quality was less than good.

The new 208 GTI is based on the three-door version of Peugeot’s newest baby hatch.

Dynamics have been boosted with wider tracks in combination with 18-inch tyres. The brakes are also upgraded. The garden variety 208 is expected here about mid 2012 in various flavours.

The GTI has a similarly styled stablemate in diesel called the 208 XY that arrives about the same time.
