Young star puts in tough laps
RISING motor racing star Callan Sayers has test-driven his Formula Ford car and admits it’s taking a while to come to grips with the fourwheeler.
‘‘On Friday last week I had my first test drive in the car I will be driving in the 2013 Australian Formula Ford Championship, the Spectrum 012,’’ he said.
‘‘We did the test at one of Australia’s most notorious race tracks, Lakeside on the north side of Brisbane.
‘‘Although I had driven a Formula Ford race car before (December, 2010) I had a lot to remember to come to grips with again.
‘‘My biggest challenge was the gear changes. The Formula Ford runs a dob-box, which potentially allows for quicker gear changes without using the clutch.
‘‘However, there is a real technique in leaning on the gear stick, lifting the throttle slightly to unload the cogs and quickly shifting into the next gear.
‘‘By the end of the day, I had 2nd to 3rd all sorted out, but going from 3rd to 4th needs a bit of work.
‘‘My right hand ended up getting really sore as the stick would vibrate violently if it didn’t go in.’’
Callan completed about 60 laps over the day.
‘‘I felt more and more confident as the day went on,’’ he said. ‘‘I was about 1.8 seconds off the lap record, and with more commitment, initially under brakes and by picking up the throttle earlier through the corner, I will be right up there.’’
This weekend he has another test day before heading to Symmons Plains for round 1 of the National Championship in early April.
