VE­LAR? This was the co­de­name used in 1969 and 1970 for pro­to­types of what be­came the orig­i­nal Range Rover. It was an ap­pro­pri­ate choice for some­thing be­ing de­vel­oped in great se­crecy. The word is de­rived from the Latin word for veil, in both lit­eral and fig­u­ra­tive senses.

Twenty-some­thing Ve­lars were made back then and many re­port­edly sur­vive to this day.
