Former sly grog shop in Kuranda listed for a $300,000 sale

THE site of a former sly grog shop in Kuranda is now for sale.

Nicknamed ‘Fern Gully’, the single- bedroom cottage at 2 Veivers Drive has been listed for $300,000.

Steeped in history, selling agent Jenny Clark said “local legend has it” that timber-getter Jack Veivers built a one- bed- room chamferboard cottage on the site where he supplied illegal alcohol to local cattlemen.

“After the cyclone of 1920 completely unroofed and demolished the house, he decided to rebuild lower down into the gully,” Ms Clark said.

“The original timber was probably harvested by Veivers and milled in Kuranda, is of extremely durable hardwood, seemingly impervious to termites and difficult to drive a nail into.

“The house is still basically one bedroom, however the front has been extended as Jack built himself a veranda separate to the living area.”

One side of the cottage features a “sleep out” and the other has been extended for a kitchen, dining and lounge area.
