The Grand Parade is one of the highlights of Cairns Festival’s annual program.

Around 3000 people – and 20 dogs – will take part in this year’s procession, which will celebrate Cairns’ diversity with the theme “Colours of Us”.

There is also an increased prize pool of $10,500 up for grabs, including a brand new $2000 design award sponsored by the Cairns

Post, along with the Cairns Post’s People’s Choice award for the best float.

The People’s Choice award will be announced online on September 5 and published in a later edition of the Cairns Post.

With a range of entertainm­ent on the Cairns Festival main stage throughout the day, including the Cairns Ukelele Community Concert, the Grand Parade day is a fun time for the whole family.

The Grand Parade will work its way along the Cairns Esplanade from 5.30pm today – remember to keep an eye on the Cairns Post number boards on the front of each float, so you know which number you need to vote for your favourite!

GRAND PARADE DAY PROGRAM

10am: Music on the Cairns Festival main stage (on the Esplanade); Cairns Ukelele Community Concert; Esplanade Markets.

3pm: Roving performers will flip, skip, dance, drum and sing their way along the Esplanade. Keep an eye out for Upbeat the drum monster and the ensemble from CIRCA as they perform astounding tricks along with a few surprises.

5.30pm: Grand Parade officially starts, presenting a colourful spectacle along the Esplanade.

7.30pm: Fireworks along the waterfront. After, head back to the Cairns Festival stage to dance the night away with The Montgomery Brothers.
