CAIRNS police are hunting a man who removed his shirt and used it to strangle a taxi driver.

A second man was travel- ling in the passenger seat when the alleged attack happened on the corner of David and Fearnley streets, Manunda, about 8pm on Thursday.

Cairns Taxis chairman Layne Gardiner has condemned the attack, which was caught on in-vehicle camera.

“It is disappointing that we’ve still got violence against people providing a public service,” he said.

“He’s (the driver) going as well as can be expected. Obviously it’s a big shock to be as- saulted by someone in such a cowardly manner. A lot of drivers assaulted like that have mental health issues and don’t return to driving.

“It’s a shame because we’re doing what we do all the time – taking people home safely.”

Mr Gardiner said all Cairns taxis were fitted with the latest security technology, including cameras that take three photos a second.

“The footage is very, very clear, so we expect to find the fellow every quickly,” he said.

Police have described both men as being Torres Strait Islander in appearance and aged in their mid-20s. The main offender also has short hair.
