Creative need leads to fashionabl­e role

“I wasn’t really sure if I wanted to do hairdressi­ng but ever since I started I love every minute.”

Ms Newton said every day was a chance to learn something new at Edge Hill’s Reds Salon and she hoped to enter her first hairdressi­ng competitio­n next year.

“I love talking to everyone. I love communicat­ing and watching all the stylists create something beautiful and mak- ing people feel good about themselves,” she said.

“We do a lot of outside work with the Cairns Amateurs, high tea events and fashion shows.

“We also do a lot of location work with weddings. I love watching the stylists transform beautiful brides with hair and make-up.”

Long hours on her feet does not faze Ms Newton – she said it is all part of the job.

“Hairdressi­ng is an amazing career to be in because you meet people all the time and you make incredible contacts,” she said. “Plus, it’s always good to have a hairdresse­r in the family.”

The bubbly Stratford resident said constant requests for services from friends and family were not necessaril­y a downside when they became a source of new clients.

“It’s always good to get friends and family. When we start doing our friends’ hair, they tell their friends and it is the start of client building.”
