Animals need lots of loving

- Nick Dalton nick.dalton@news.com.au

ANIMAL owners are obliged to look after their pets.

People who decide to add a dog or cat to their household can’t just dump it or palm it off to an animal shelter after the novelty wears off.

Owning a dog or a cat comes with care and attention.

The animal must be fed, looked after and, in the case of dogs, taken for walks. There are costly veterinary bills too.

At this time of the year many parents think it is a great idea to give their children a cute puppy or kitten for Christmas.

But after the school holidays end and the children are back at school and, as the puppy or kitten becomes a dog or cat and loses its appeal, the pets become a burden.

Dogs left alone at home during the day get bored and start barking or getting loose and running wild.

The Far North is struggling to handle the large numbers of unwanted pets.

The largest pet shelter in Cairns operated by the RSPCA is due to shut down for 12 months for redevelopment. YAPs is struggling too with the temporary shutdown of Paws and Claws Refuge and Boarding Centre at Port Douglas.

Animal Rehoming Cairns and Tablelands District is full to overflowing.

Choosing the right pet is fun, but takes time, planning and lots of research.

Remember, that pets, while bringing joy, are a life-long commitment. Given the chance they will love their owners for life.

The alternative is death if they cannot be rehomed. The animals will have to be put down.

Do you want that on your conscience?
