HUGO’S LONG, LONG STRUGGLE

-

QYour dachshund Hugo is just about as famous as you. Has he got a Hockeyroos kit?

AOh, I really want to. The thing is all the girls in the Hockeyroos pretty much have dogs now so that should be something HA should start providing. That’s my first demand. I got him about 18 months ago and it was kind of driven by the fact that often we train during the day in the morning and then home all day so I’d just be at home by myself and I’ve always loved dachshunds, I don’t know. It might be something in my personality but I’ve always loved them, even if it was for the comedic factor of just watching them struggle through life trying to do stuff. He’s been a great addition in the last 18 months. (IG: @hugo_the_sawsage)

QWhat has having a dog taught you about hockey?

AHe’s definitely taught me to relax a lot more and not stress too much because he’s pretty easygoing even though he’s a very spoiled dog. I’m definitely not someone to take hockey too seriously. I know people get caught up in being pro- fessional. You can be professional but it doesn’t have to go so far as not going out with your friends, not having a little bit of fun now and then. I think that’s what is going to make my career have some longevity, is that I am very light-hearted off the field. On the field I am very competitive, but I think off the field that’s why I like hockey so much.
