Staying true to himself

NICK Kyrgios is not going to waste time thinking about his image.

The 21-year-old world No.13 has been singled out as a future Australian Open winner as well as a potential world No.1 by his peers and Australian tennis icon Rod Laver but his career has been plagued by in- consistent results and his suspension last year for tanking a match. Kyrgios said he was confident that the more the public got to know him, they would better understand his unpredictable nature.

He has revealed he has a bone problem in his left knee, but insists it won’t stop him from causing some damage at this month’s Australian Open.

The worst of Kyrgios was on display on Thursday night when he put in an insipid display during a 6-2 6-2 Hopman Cup loss to American Jack Sock.

He ruled out wholesale changes to the way he handled himself, on and off the court.

“The only thing I will focus on is what I can control,” he said. “I can’t control what peo- ple think of me publicly, for sure I have had a hand in the negative perception that people have of me but for every negative I have done, there are 15 or 20 positives that don’t get reported and I understand that better now.

“I will keep being me, being true to myself and keep working hard to be a better player and I hope the public take more interest to find out the real me rather than just the negative headlines they read every so often but again, I can’t control that.”

Kyrgios finally underwent an MRI on Thursday morning, with the scan showing up the “start of some bone stuff in my knee”.

“It’s not terrible, but it’s not great,” Kyrgios said.
