Christina’s bid to help set up a library in Nepal

-

A LIFE-changing trip to a Nepalese village has led to an international internship for former Cairns State High School captain Christina Lee.

Now studying law at the Australian National University in Canberra, Christina will spend her summer break in Paris volunteering with the NGO Libraries Without Borders.

“After I returned from Nepal, I contacted Libraries Without Borders, which believes that libraries are places where the poorest and most underserved people can broad- en their horizons, transform their lives and build social capital,” Christina says.

“Since 2007, over two million people have benefited from LWB’s programs.

“However, they have not started any projects in Nepal, so I sent a proposal to build a li- brary in Batase village. I noticed Batase especially lacks access to information, which is a fundamental human right.”

Christina says she is determined to help set up LWB’s ‘Ideas Box’ in the village.

“The Ideas Box is a portable media centre set up in less than 20 minutes,” Christina says.

“With a satellite internet connection, tablets, books in paper and electronic format, and a mobile cinema to empower children and adults, it can connect the most remote villages and refugee camps to the rest of the world.”
