Camilleri aims for honours with bat or club

- JACOB GRAMS

RHYS Camilleri has just won representative honours for his cricket but will swap the willow for the iron this weekend in a bid for golfing glory.

The Rovers top-order batsman possesses as much a penchant for cricket as he does for golf, in which he will represent Southern Districts in the Agrade pennant semi-final today.

Fortunately his side made the finals without him while he was in Mackay winning a place in the NQ under-21 cricket team last weekend.

Whether it’s the time on the fairway or a change of club from Tully to Rovers for the Cricket Far North first grade season, Camilleri seems to be firing in both disciplines.

The 20-year-old sits fourth among runscorers after five rounds and said he felt comfortable after pushing himself to hit the ground running.

“I wanted a big start to this year and wanted to make a good impression in my first season at a new club,” he said.

“It’s a big difference playing for Tully than playing for Rovers. Last year I felt I had to make sure I made a good score every time but this year I thought I had to find my place in the side and fight for a spot.”

Camilleri would be in his element with the start of the two-dayers this weekend, but instead of taking strike on the pitch at Loder Park, the fairways of Palmer Sea Reef will be in his sights.

Rovers will have to go on without him against a talentpacked Atherton side in the Round 6 match-up. Norths play Barron and United take on Mulgrave at Griffiths Park in the other first grade games.
