Wade declares opener season on BBL bowlers

-

JAMES BRESNEHAN AFTER blasting Perth Scorchers out of the BBL finals in Perth on Thursday night, Matthew Wade says he has found his calling as a Hobart Hurricanes opener.

Wade clubbed 71 runs off 45 balls in a knock that silenced the crowd at Perth Stadium.

The Hurricanes will tomorrow meet either the Melbourne Renegades or Adelaide Strikers, who played their semi-final last night.

Wade, in his first season for the Hurricanes after moving back to his home state from Victoria, has been an instant hit.

With D’Arcy Short on national T20 duty, Wade happily has taken on the opening role for the past three games.

“It’s good fun,” he said. “I haven’t minded floating up and down the order.

“It’s pretty rare that someone can go up and down the order from game to game. I’ve enjoyed that more than I have in previous years, but to get up the top is the spot to be for sure.”

Ben McDermott (67 off 30) and Dan Christian (37 off 22) helped the Hurricanes to 4-210, the equal-third highest BBL score. The Scorchers crashed to 5-57 and were all out for 139 off 17.4 overs.

“I think this win shows the depth we’ve got within the team,” Wade said.

“We dropped a couple of players for this game and D’Arcy went to play for Australia.

“We’ve had so many players float throughout the order with the bat that we are confident that everyone is ready to go when the get their chance.”
