5 TRADE SKILLS IN SHORTAGE

-

1 GLAZIER

This trade involves measuring, cutting, finishing, fitting and installing flat glass and mirrors. Not only are glaziers on the government’s national skills shortage list but an extra 1000 roles are forecast to be added between 2017 and 2022.

2 PLUMBER

About 9600 more plumbers are forecast to be needed between 2017 and 2022. More than two-thirds have a certificate III or IV qualification as their highest level of education.

3 HAIRDRESSER

Government research suggests shortages are evident for trade-qualified and experienced hairdressers as employers generally consider those who hold fast-tracked hairdressing qualifications to be unsuitable.

4 METAL TRADES WORKER

Metal fitters and machinists, locksmiths, welders and sheet metal trade workers are all included on the skills shortage list. About 200 more jobs are expected for precision metal trades workers – such as engravers and locksmiths – across five years.

5 BAKER

Bakers and pastry cooks are also on the list. About 2500 more workers are expected to be needed by 2022.
