Tyzone wins over top hoop

- JORDAN GERRANS

PREMIER jockey Jeff Lloyd was not sure about Tolga star Tyzone at first but he is a big believer now.

Since transferring to the Toby Edmonds stable on the Gold Coast, Lloyd has been installed as the Far North-owned horse’s pilot and will again be on board today when he steps up to the $70,000 Benchmark 95 Handicap (1200).

Lloyd, who moved within a win of recording 100 Queensland metropolitan winners for the second season in a row with a Gold Coast treble earlier this week, was not sure if Tyzone’s fantastic north Queensland form would translate to Brisbane.

“I like him. The first time I ever rode him was in the trial in April and I was very impressed,” Lloyd said.

“I was quite shocked, because I was not sure he would be strong enough to hold his form here from up there. “That trial was outstanding.” Tyzone will need to contend with the awkward gate of 11 in the first race of nine at Doomben this morning.

“Toby has been very happy with him,” Lloyd said. “We expected him to run well in that first race and he did.

“He has not lost anything since that win so we are hoping he races well again.”

Lloyd set a Queensland metropolitan record when he recorded 137 wins last season, smashing Chris Munce’s then record of 102.

He has a third straight Queensland metropolitan premiership in his keeping and has ridden 336 city winners since returning from a healthenforced break in 2014.
