MUNDINE IN REVERSE

-

Q Another Tully athlete told me you were a pretty good rugby league player growing up.

A That’s probably Col Wilkie (far right). We played footy together and I won junior player of the year, the season after him. My dream was to play rugby league. I always made the representative teams and played in a few carnivals. I was captain one year. We got beaten by a Torres Strait team both years. I played hooker and scored a heap of tries and I missed out on an FNQ side. I think I was 13 and pulled off my boots and said ‘I’m done’. I didn’t like that my future was in someone else’s hands. I took my boots down to the footy club and gave them to another kid. But when I finish boxing, I’ll probably play a bit of footy, maybe play in the Koori Knockout, or something like that. It’d be fun.

Q You could be another Anthony Mundine.

A Yep. Just in reverse (laughs). It’s funny. I messaged him the other day and I know Choc well. We’re mates. I’m dancing this weekend in Redfern and let him know that he should come down.
