THE PATHWAY TO OPTOMETRY
EDUCATION
Entry-level optometry programs are available at the following Australian universities: Queensland University of Technology, University of New South Wales, Flinders University, University of Melbourne and Deakin University. The QUT program involves a threeyear course in a Bachelor of Vision Science, followed by a two-year Master of Optometry course. Graduates will be able to practise as an optometrist and register with the Optometry Board of Australia.
MORE TRAINING
Optometrists who do not enter private practice after completing their course can continue to undertake higher studies. They can become vision scientists and obtain higher qualifications such as a master’s degree or a PhD. Within optometry, there are specialisations such as lowvision aide, children’s vision or contact lens. A separate field of practitioners, ophthalmologists, specialise in treating eye disease and eye surgery.
PAY SCALE
The average salary for an optometrist in Australia is about $84,000 per year. This can range from between about $67,000 to $116,000 depending on experience and specialisation.
