Matt follows uncle’s squash footsteps

-

SUSAN BOTICA GARRADUNGA’S Matt Finitsis has moved a step closer to becoming a world-ranked squash player like his uncle, Steven Finitsis.

The teenager has been selected for the Queensland Sharks to compete in the 2018 Australian Junior Squash Championships in Darwin from October 4-7.

Finitsis (pictured), now ranked No.4 in the state Under 15 male junior age rankings, will compete in the individuals competition, which runs from September 29 to October 2.

Finitsis, 14, plays club squash at the Innisfail PCYC and has been promoted to Division 1 in the summer fixture competition.

In July, in the lead-up to his Sharks selection, he competed in the Queensland State Junior Championships in Rockhampton, playing in both individual and team events.

He competed in the Under 15s and Under 17s boys’ events and was No.2 player in the Redbacks Under 15 boys’ team.

Overall, he finished fifth in the Under 15s and 10th in the Under 17s.

The Redbacks won the 2018 regional teams title, beating the Brisbane City Vipers, and the Under 15 boys’ team won their division.

To qualify for his selection, Finitsis was required to play in the three compulsory qualifiers in the Northern Region to gain rankings.
