PRIDE OF SHIRE

FAR NORTHERN RAIDERS EYE FINALS

- JORDAN GERRANS AND MATT NICHOLLS

THEY are the pride of their northern communities, the Crocs and the Sharks.

Mossman-Port Douglas Sharks cocaptain Billy Segeyaro (left) and Port Douglas Crocs skipper Kye Chapple will today attempt to create history and bring the CDRL and Cairns AFL premierships back to the shire.

For the Sharks, they will end a 20year drought if they can beat Tully in tonight’s decider.

The Crocs are chasing their third straight flag and will be the favourites against Cairns Saints in today’s big clash.

Chapple says 2018 has been different to the last two premierships, with the squad having less star power but more grit and determination.

“Last year we had an unbelievable side,” Chapple said.

“We have more blokes this season that do not have as much skill but more go, defensive pressure and want.

“We do not have the talent as last year but no one takes a backward step, guys like Jordan Chapman and Skip Gribbon, they have come a long way.”

Segeyaro said it would be a dream come true to lead the Mossman side to a famous victory.

“It would mean so much to so many people,” he said.

“The whole community is right behind us and so many people have followed the club for no success.”

Douglas Shire mayor Julia Leu said the region was backing both teams.

“Douglas Shire is right behind the Mossman-Port Douglas Sharks and Port Douglas Crocs this Saturday,” Cr Leu said.

“This is a really historic moment for these clubs.

“It absolutely fantastic to see sporting success stories come out of Douglas Shire.

“The council will decorate the Mossman administration building in sky blue and dark blue to show our support for the clubs.

“Their success helps put our little region on the map and reminds everyone just how good we are up here.

“There is definitely a buzz around town and everyone is hoping both clubs can bring home the silverware.”
