It’s a catwalk of creativity

- ANDREA FALVO

CAIRNS students will hit the catwalk in an ensemble of creative constructions made from paper, fabric, wire plastics and more, as part of the 31st annual Centre of Artistic Development Wearable Art Parade.

Hannah Burnett, 12, has aspired to enter the show — a showcase for Cairns State High School visual art program members — since she was in primary school. After months of hard work, she has created an outfit from scrap fabric, pressed flowers and leaves and lights.

“I really just wanted to look like a nature fairy,” she said.

“I especially love the rainforest around here, there’s so much native flora and fauna.”

Fellow Year 7s Lola Hazelwood, Monica Dixon and Mizuki Kawabata have created a bright, Far North Queensland flower-inspired outfit.

Co-ordinators Agata Evans and Holly Mervyn-Jones were happy to have had about 35 entries in this year’s show.

“Students usually start on their pieces at the beginning of the year when we release the categories,” Ms Evans said. “I love the atmosphere of it and on the night, it’s just amazing. It’s a lot of hard work, but every time it’s worth it.” Doors open at Crosswell Hall at 6pm.
