40-over cricket season begins today

- MATT NICHOLLS

LOCAL cricket purists will be happy when Twenty20 games go out the window today and the longer format is rolled out.

Two-day matches have been expelled from the Cricket Far North competition this summer, so those hoping for a longer hit in the middle will have to settle for 40-over matches.

Undoubtedly, the match of the day will be the contest between Norths and Mulgrave at Griffiths Park.

These two sides were the dominant forces in the early T20 rounds and bragging rights will be up for grabs when they clash today.

Norths beat Mulgrave in their T20 meeting and it’s still the Toads’ only loss for the season. Norths are undefeated.

Across the park, United will host Cassowary Coast in what should be a competitive clash.

The Cyclones have been hot and cold in the T20 competition, but have started to show signs of consistency with a more settled XI.

Cassowary Coast skipper Luke McAvoy said at the start of the season he expected his team to take a while to find its feet in the first grade competition.

Nearby, Rovers will host Barron at Endeavour Park.

These two sides struggled for wins in the opening rounds of the T20 competition and will be keen to get off to a good start in the 40-over format.

Today’s matches start at 12.30pm.

Atherton will put its feet up with a bye.
