DARREN BUCHANAN MANAGING DIRECTOR, HAYS QUEENSLAND

Apply for roles that require experience and skills that match your previous work history, and emphasise the relevancy of your past jobs in your application. Regardless of the length of your career break, you need to provide explicit examples of previous successes as proof that you can do the job well. This proof will help your CV stand out. After all, it is your achievements and results that count the most. One of the simplest ways to add quantifiable accomplishments to your CV is to use action verbs. For example, instead of writing that you managed a team, try verbs such as “directed” or “guided”.

SINEAD HOURIGAN BRISBANE DIRECTOR, ROBERT WALTERS

Be willing to consider short-term contract assignments as well as looking at permanent employment opportunities, as the ability to demonstrate a willingness to work can go a long way with a potential employer. Take on volunteering options within your own community network. This again displays a commitment to work but may also extend your network and give you access to other employment opportunities that might not have otherwise arisen. Look at any potential training and development opportunities that might increase your employability.

JULIE FORD SENIOR EXECUTIVE CONSULTANT, McARTHUR

Obtaining employment while you are employed is easier, whether you are a good employee or not. When you are not working, use this time effectively. Look at further education and training – undertake a relevant course to increase your skills and knowledge. You might look at volunteering, tutoring or get involved in the community. Whatever you do, don’t sit around at home watching Netflix. When you don’t have a job, your job is to get a job, so get up and structure your day around job search activities and incorporate some of the suggestions I have made into your day.

DR NERIDA HILLBERG DIRECTOR OF PSYCHOLOGY, FERRIS MANAGEMENT CONSULTANTS

Persistence is key. It’s useful to view the job-search process as a full-time job. You need to relentlessly pursue your goal and this involves commitment, time and energy. Consider volunteering as this puts you in contact with people who may provide a lead to a paid role. You could also consider applying for temp assignments as these can turn into a permanent position if you impress the right people and there is an organisational need. Ensure you have an error-free CV and application letter that are wellpresented, concise and cogent.
