CWA to help struggling fruit growers get out of a real jam

-

IF there’s one lesson the ladies of the Country Women’s Association want people to learn, it’s that you’re never too old – or too young – to pump up the jam.

Members of the Sydney City Branch will make more than 2000 jars of jam ahead of the festive season.

And they say this year will include a heavy focus on strawberry jam in support of Australian growers, some of whom have been forced to dump tonnes of produce due to the fruit-tampering crisis.

But there will also be flavours ranging from strawberry champagne and lime pickles to mandarin and passionfruit jam with every 10 jars using about 1kg of fruit.

Patricia Boyer, 79, a land cookery officer for the branch’s Phillip Group, said hundreds of kilograms of strawberries donated by farm- ers with excess were used to make the jam.

“It feels wonderful, absolutely wonderful because our main lot of members live in country areas and we do want to support them.”
