Park not in peril, says the council

HOLLOWAYS BEACH residents have expressed concern at what was thought to be the beginning of development at Acacia Park.

The park on Acacia St near the Barron River public boat ramp is categorised as a bushland/conservation area.

Cairns Regional Council confirmed the construction of a gravel footing on which a temporary site office and storage area will to be established ahead of the Holloways Beach foreshore improvement works.

“Gravel has been placed onsite as a foundation for a temporary shed,” a council spokeswoman said.

“No slab has been laid, nor any permanent structures installed.

The area will be returfed and returned to original condition at the completion of works.

“Council is the trustee for the land and is permitted to use the site in this manner.”

Last month the council approved the $2.9 million upgrade of Holloways Beach foreshore to be completed by June 2019.

The project includes parking improvements in Casuarina St and the reopening of the Lake St intersection.
