Dancing their way to the top
JOSE Martinez was born in El Salvador and grew up in Australia, but keeps in touch with his Latin roots through dance.
“Australia has given me the opportunity to make a career out of dancing, which I’m grateful for,” says the Sabor Dance Company director and instructor.
Next month, he and fellow dancers from Sabor are off to Brisbane for the World Salsa Solos, where they will perform on the international stage alongside some of the best dancers in the world.
They will compete in a variety of categories across the solo, couple and group divisions from November 22-25.
“Latin dancing has grown dramatically since I moved here in 2006 and I’ve had the opportunity to share my passion for it with many people,” he said.
“We have had exposure to a variety of artists and national and international events, as well as the opportunity to expose students to the world’s Latin dance community.”
Jose says the Salsa Solos are an opportunity to showcase Latin dance and bring the dance community together.
“We always look forward to the event and are proud to represent Cairns on such a great international platform.”
He says Latin dancing has a range of benefits.
“Dancing is a physical exer- cise and it also assists with memory. Students have a lot of fun while meeting new friends and they also have the opportunity to perform and compete.
“Once you start a beginners’ class you have no idea how far it could take you.”
Jose has been teaching and choreographing dance in Cairns and Brisbane for the past 16 years and has been recognised with an award for helping to grow Latin dancing in Australia. He and his troupe have also won national titles and performed and taught nationally and internationally.
He says he loves sharing his passion for dance with others.
“Dancing makes me feel happy. It’s exciting, liberating and it’s a stress relief. I feel a connection with the music and my partner and I are proud to share my culture with people,” he said.
Jose says Latin dancing is open to anyone of any age and any background.
“I break the moves down in simple steps for my students.
“I do not just teach the moves. It is an all encompassing experience because I teach about my culture as well.”
Jose also injects “sabor” (Spanish for flavour) into his dancing and classes, which include salsa, bachata, samba, cha cha cha and merengue. For more information about Sabor Dance Company, call 0402 004 681 or visit www.sabordance.com
