Ceremony for children
the day was about celebrating the lives of the children lost.
“It’s an emotional day, but it’s one that’s around celebrating,” he said. “It’s very much a community event where there’s a lot of family involved, feasting and dancing as opposed to a mourning when the funeral happens.
“It’s important for the family as it’s part of the grieving process and of closure and that cultural responsibility being fulfilled.”
The day will conclude with a cultural feast for family members and the extended community at the Fred Moule Pavilion, Cairns Showground, in the evening.
