Falcons reckon they have mindset for success

-

JORDAN GERRANS the Far North club are 0-2 on the season and host the undefeated Townsville Cyclones today from 5pm at Vico Oval, but the cabinet maker by trade can already feel the wheel turning under new coach Jim Garcia.

“We are more of a team this year and I feel that is due to Jimmy and what he has brought,” Phillips said.

“A few of the senior blokes have stepped up on to the com- mittee of the club and that has helped to turn the culture around. We have not had a win yet but we are trying to turn it into a winning culture.”

In the short north Queensland gridiron season, the former rugby union player with Barron River knows winning needs to start today for the Falcons if they are going to be a contender.

“It is the mentality more than anything, sometimes last year I felt the mood was ‘your best is good enough’, but now we want to be the best and win,” Phillips said.

“It is do or die for us because if we do not win this week, it is going to be a huge struggle to make the championship.”

First-year Falcons coach Garcia says Phillips has more than earned his title as one of the captains on the growing club. “He is a real club man,” he said.
